About Organisation
The Human Frontier Science Program Organization (HFSPO) manages the Human Frontier Science Program Research Grants, an international funding initiative supporting frontier research in life sciences. Based in Strasbourg, the organization promotes groundbreaking scientific work that expands understanding of complex biological systems. HFSPO encourages innovative and high-risk research that brings together scientists from different countries and disciplines. Through global collaboration, the program advances discoveries that benefit humanity. Its mission focuses on supporting scientific excellence, interdisciplinary approaches, and international partnerships. By funding bold ideas, HFSPO helps researchers explore new directions in biology, contributing to major advances in life science research worldwide.
About the Grant
The Human Frontier Science Program Research Grants support international teams conducting pioneering research in life sciences. The program funds collaborative projects that explore complex biological mechanisms, ranging from molecular studies to ecosystem-level processes. These interdisciplinary science grants encourage participation from fields such as physics, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, and computational biology. HFSP prioritizes innovative approaches that challenge existing scientific paradigms and introduce new research methods. The initiative aims to strengthen global scientific collaboration and support transformative discoveries. Through this international research funding opportunity, teams of scientists work together across countries to address fundamental questions about living systems and advance knowledge for the benefit of society.
Who can Apply?
The Human Frontier Science Program Research Grants support international teams of 2–4 independent scientists leading research groups. Applicants must hold a doctoral degree such as a PhD, MD, or equivalent and must manage their own laboratories. Individual researchers, postdoctoral fellows, and PhD students cannot apply independently. The Principal Applicant must have a laboratory located in an HFSP member country, while other collaborators may be based anywhere worldwide. Teams must include scientists from different countries and preferably different continents. Applicants should not have previously collaborated or published together, ensuring new global partnerships. Both early-career and established researchers are encouraged to participate in this international life science research grant program .
How to Apply?
Interested research teams must begin the application by creating a submission on the Proposal Central platform and preparing a Letter of Intent. The letter outlines the proposed interdisciplinary project and participating international researchers. After submission, selected teams may be invited to submit a full proposal. Applicants should ensure their project meets HFSP requirements for novelty, collaboration, and international research partnerships before completing the application process.
Application Deadline
The deadline to submit the Letter of Intent for the Human Frontier Science Program Research Grants is 26 March 2026. Early preparation is recommended for teams planning international collaborative research proposals .
