About the Grant
The Artistic Research Abroad Grant 2026 supports Germany-based performing artists undertaking international artistic research in dance and theatre. Funding enables artists to conduct focused research outside German-speaking countries for a maximum of two weeks. Support may cover travel expenses, a €500 weekly allowance, or a combination of both. Research should contribute to artistic development, international networking, creative collaboration or future projects. The programme is intended specifically for artistic research rather than tourism, guest performances, festival attendance, study visits or professional training. Sustainable travel is encouraged, particularly rail travel for suitable shorter journeys.
Who can Apply?
The Artistic Research Abroad Grant 2026 is intended for performing artists based in Germany who work professionally in dance or theatre. Individual artists and individual representatives of ensembles or collectives may apply. In exceptional circumstances, travel expenses for two people working on the same research project may be considered. Applicants must demonstrate a clear artistic research purpose and explain how international research contributes to their practice or future work. Research must take place outside German-speaking countries. Study trips, tourism, guest performances, festival visits, advanced training, commercial seminars and delivery of training activities are not eligible for funding.
How to Apply?
Applicants should prepare a clear artistic research proposal describing objectives, activities, international contacts, expected outcomes and project timeline. A financing plan covering income, expenses and other funding should also be prepared, along with comparative travel quotations where required. Applications should demonstrate the artistic value and international relevance of the proposed research. Applicants must submit their complete application at least 12 weeks before the planned start of their trip.
