About Organisation

The Connected Conservation Foundation, in collaboration with the Airbus Foundation, is dedicated to using innovative technology to protect the planet’s vulnerable species and ecosystems. Their mission focuses on combining satellite technology with machine learning to enable effective conservation practices. By providing access to high-resolution satellite data, the Foundation empowers individuals and organizations to monitor, analyze, and respond to threats facing biodiversity. The initiative aims to bridge the gap between modern technology and traditional conservation methods, offering tools that help identify and mitigate risks to species and habitats in real-time. The foundation actively collaborates with conservationists, environmentalists, and local partners to ensure accurate field insights and data validation. Through their Satellites for Biodiversity Award, they support the development of projects that address pressing conservation challenges, fostering innovative approaches to ecosystem management, restoration, and connectivity. The Foundation’s vision is to contribute to global conservation efforts by offering resources that are essential for data-driven decisions aimed at protecting our planet’s biodiversity.

About the Grant

The Satellites for Biodiversity Award, now in its third round, invites proposals from individuals and non-profit organizations that use high-resolution satellite data in conjunction with machine learning to address conservation challenges. This initiative, led by the Connected Conservation Foundation in collaboration with the Airbus Foundation, aims to support projects that focus on the monitoring and protection of vulnerable species, habitats, and ecosystems. Key themes include the state of species, invasive species management, ecosystem management, ecosystem connectivity, and restoration efforts. Selected projects should have a strong emphasis on analyzing data to assess threats to species, track invasive species, or monitor ecosystem changes. Winners of the award will gain access to Airbus’s advanced satellite imagery, including Pléiades and Pléiades Neo data, as well as $6,000 in funding and technical support to enhance their research. Additionally, the winning projects will receive access to ArcGIS Pro software from ESRI, further supporting their efforts in leveraging geospatial data for conservation purposes.

Who can Apply?

The Satellites for Biodiversity Award is open to individuals and not-for-profit organizations globally. Applicants must meet certain criteria to be eligible for consideration. Eligible applicants must have experience working with geospatial data, specifically using ESRI software or similar tools, either through their own expertise or in collaboration with partners. Local partnerships are essential, as they will help validate field-based insights and data. Applicants must also possess the necessary resources and technical capabilities to conduct research and development activities in conservation, ensuring the proposed project can achieve meaningful outcomes. Additionally, all applicants must be committed to sharing data in accordance with the program’s guidelines and principles. Commercial, for-profit entities are not eligible for this award. Instead, the focus is on individuals, research institutions, and non-profit organizations with a track record of contributing to biodiversity and conservation efforts. Successful applicants will also demonstrate a willingness to collaborate with local partners and share their findings, contributing to the global knowledge base on biodiversity conservation.

How to Apply?

To apply for the Satellites for Biodiversity Award, submit a proposal detailing how you will use high-resolution satellite data and machine learning to address conservation challenges. The proposal should align with one or more of the program’s themes, such as ecosystem management or species protection. Ensure your proposal includes relevant partnerships, technical expertise, and a plan for data usage and sharing.
