About Organisation

TDR, the UNICEF/UNDP/World Bank/WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases, based at the World Health Organization in Geneva, Switzerland, aims to address global health challenges. TDR conducts research to support the prevention and control of infectious diseases in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), focusing on innovative, cross-cutting strategies. It fosters collaboration among international partners and promotes capacity-building in the research field, ensuring effective, evidence-based solutions to tackle health issues like poverty-related diseases. By prioritizing health equity and gender, TDR seeks to make a meaningful impact in improving public health, especially in underserved urban and peri-urban settings.

About the Grant

This call for applications invites proposals that apply an intersectional gender lens to infectious disease implementation research in urban and peri-urban settings. The focus is on addressing the challenges posed by infectious diseases of poverty while considering how gender dynamics influence health outcomes. Successful applicants will conduct research for a 12-month period, with up to USD 60,000 in funding per proposal. This initiative aims to generate evidence to identify barriers and enablers of healthcare access and inform better, more equitable urban health interventions. The grant aligns with TDR’s broader strategies to promote gender-sensitive, sustainable solutions to infectious diseases.

Who can Apply?

The call is open to institutions from low- or middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly those with expertise in intersectional gender research applied to public health. Eligible applicants must demonstrate experience in infectious disease prevention, implementation research, and urban health systems. Priority is given to institutions that can integrate gender analysis into their projects and show a track record in conducting research on health inequities. Proposals from first-time researchers and female researchers are strongly encouraged. Collaborative partnerships with high- or upper-middle-income countries may be considered if the lead institution is in an LMIC.
