About Organisation

The Balkan Investigative Reporting Network (BIRN) is a regional network supporting independent journalism, investigative reporting and media development across the Balkans. BIRN works with journalists, media organizations and civil society actors to strengthen professional journalism and improve public access to reliable information on important social and political issues. Its activities include investigative reporting, journalism training, research, media development and regional collaboration. Through training programmes and mentorship initiatives, BIRN helps journalists develop stronger investigative skills and produce reporting on issues affecting communities across the region. The organization also promotes ethical journalism, accountability and responsible reporting on sensitive subjects including gender-based violence and digital threats.

About the Grant

The Regional Training on Gender-Responsive Reporting and Digital Violence Against Women is a two-day programme designed for journalists, media professionals and journalism students from the Western Balkans. Organized by BIRN in partnership with the Kosovo Women’s Network, the training focuses on technology-facilitated violence against women and girls, gender-responsive reporting, investigative techniques, ethical journalism and digital safety. Participants will combine theoretical learning with practical exercises and case-based activities. Following the training, participants may develop story pitches for consideration in a four-month editorial mentorship programme. Selected participants may receive editorial support and a journalism prize to help produce their investigative stories.

Who can Apply?

The programme is intended for journalists, media professionals and journalism students from the Western Balkans. Applicants should demonstrate an interest in gender-responsive journalism, investigative reporting, technology-facilitated violence against women and girls, gender-based violence or related media issues. Participants should be interested in developing accurate, ethical and survivor-centred reporting. Applicants are encouraged to explain their journalism or academic background, relevant interests and potential investigative story ideas. Strong candidates should demonstrate motivation to use the training to improve their reporting and potentially develop an investigative story through the subsequent editorial mentorship opportunity.

How to Apply?

Eligible journalists, media professionals and journalism students should review the programme requirements and submit the application before the deadline. Prepare information about your journalism or academic background, your interest in gender-responsive reporting and digital violence, and potential investigative story ideas.
