About the Grant
The Wellcome Prize for Mental Health Science with Nature is a major international prize for new interventions addressing anxiety, depression or psychosis. Eligible interventions can be pharmacological, psychological, social or digital and must demonstrate measurable clinical benefit supported by robust evidence. The competition aims not only to recognise scientific achievement but also to accelerate adoption, policy integration and real-world impact. One winning team will receive US$1 million, while three finalist teams will each receive US$250,000. Finalists and the winner will also receive visibility, connections and tailored practical support.
Who can Apply?
The Prize is open to research teams worldwide, subject to Wellcome’s restricted-country rules. Teams can be based at universities, research institutes, hospitals, government or not-for-profit organisations, or SMEs. The intervention must be novel, address anxiety, depression or psychosis, demonstrate measurable clinical benefit and be supported by an appropriately powered randomised controlled trial or equivalent rigorous evidence. Recent clinical data must have been published or deposited in a recognised repository within the past five years. The intervention should still be at an early implementation stage and must not yet be standard of care in more than two countries.
How to Apply?
Research teams should select a lead applicant and complete the official online application form. Applications are open for self-submission, so formal nomination is not required. Applicants should demonstrate the intervention’s novelty, scientific credibility, measurable clinical benefit and potential for adoption. Teams should also explain how the intervention was developed and provide evidence supporting its clinical effectiveness. The application must be complete and submitted online by the official closing time.
