About Organisation

In 2022, Schmidt Ocean Institute (SOI) and the National Geographic Society formed a collaboration to advance ocean science and exploration by offering early career scientists from around the world unique research opportunities. This partnership builds on both organizations’ long-standing commitments to fostering diverse perspectives, supporting local leadership in ocean sciences, and providing essential research resources. Their joint initiative focuses on equipping scientists with tools and support to study and protect less-explored areas of the ocean, ultimately strengthening conservation efforts and promoting scientific innovation. Through access to SOI’s cutting-edge Falkor (too) research vessel, the partnership allows researchers to leverage world-class technology, including onboard labs, underwater robots, high-performance computing, and new research tools. By connecting scientists globally, this program encourages groundbreaking work and the development of local capacity in marine sciences, amplifying the voices and contributions of early-career ocean experts.

About the Grant

The National Geographic Society, in partnership with Schmidt Ocean Institute, offers grants up to $20,000 USD to support early-career scientists undertaking exploratory ocean research. This initiative provides applicants with an opportunity to conduct pioneering work aboard SOI’s state-of-the-art Falkor (too) research vessel during its 2025 journey along South America’s southeastern coast. Grant awardees become part of the prestigious National Geographic Explorer Community, gaining access to extensive resources for training, network-building, and capacity development. The Falkor (too) is equipped with advanced labs, underwater robots, high-performance computing, and a host of tools for research innovation. The grant is particularly suited for projects focused on deep-sea research, oceanographic science, or similar fields. By supporting such efforts, the program helps enhance local marine science capabilities and broaden access to sophisticated scientific infrastructure.

Who can Apply?

This opportunity is tailored for early career scientists with a background in marine sciences, demonstrating experience in ship-based research, deep-sea exploration, or oceanographic science with minimal guidance. Applicants must be 18 years or older, and projects must align with Falkor (too)’s 2025 research regions along the southeast coast of South America. Individuals who are already National Geographic Explorers are not eligible to apply. Preference will be given to candidates from the 2025 fieldwork regions or those who lack access to the advanced infrastructure available aboard Falkor (too). Proposals should emphasize how access to the vessel’s resources will support their project. The initiative values inclusivity, encouraging applicants from diverse backgrounds and historically underrepresented communities in marine sciences.

How to Apply?

Submit a single proposal as a project leader through the National Geographic Society’s online portal. Include a completed “Additional Information” form detailing equipment and logistical requirements.

Application Deadline

Full applications are due by November 14, 2024, 11:59 p.m. EDT.
