Established in New York City in 1920 and now based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, NBER has a vast network of over 1,800 academic economists. This network includes many distinguished researchers, including 41 Nobel Prize winners in Economic Sciences and 13 former chairs of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers. NBER is renowned for its working paper series and for its Business Cycle Dating Committee, which tracks U.S. economic activity. The organization maintains a nonpartisan stance, focusing on providing background data and studies to inform public and private sector decision-making without making policy recommendations.

About the Grant

The NBER, through its Economics of Science Initiative, offers small travel grants to support early-career researchers studying the economics of science. With backing from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, these grants are designed to fund travel that enables direct interactions between researchers and scientific organizations, including research labs, universities, or funding bodies. The goal is to advance understanding of how science progresses and how funding practices impact scientific outcomes. These grants aim to foster collaborations that enrich researchers’ understanding of the management, funding, and practices of science, while also informing scientific funding organizations. Researchers can apply for travel support up to $5,000, which may be used for visits or small meetings that enhance their research and collaboration.

Who can Apply?

This grant is open to early-career researchers studying the economics of science. Applicants do not need to be affiliated with NBER, and researchers from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply. Applicants from any country are eligible, as there are no residency requirements. Proposals can be submitted by researchers from various disciplines, and priority will be given to those conducting projects that contribute to advancing scientific understanding and the operational practices of science funding bodies. Applicants must submit a proposal that details the project, potential partners, and the amount of funding requested. A note of support from the partner organization is encouraged, though not mandatory.

How to Apply?

To apply, submit a one-page proposal outlining the project, the organization or researchers involved, and the travel or meeting expenses. Include a CV and, if relevant, a note of support.
