About Organisation

The Netherlands Film Fund is the national agency responsible for supporting professional film production and film-related activities in the Netherlands. The Fund provides financial contributions for film development, production, distribution, and other activities within the Dutch film sector. It supports both emerging and experienced filmmakers while encouraging artistic quality, diversity, innovation, and international visibility. Through its funding programmes, the Netherlands Film Fund helps producers, directors, screenwriters, and creative teams develop and realize ambitious film projects. Its programmes cover various formats and genres, including short films, animation, documentaries, feature films, and international co-productions, strengthening the Netherlands’ creative film industry.


About the Grant

The Short Animation Grant Netherlands, officially known as the Realization of Short Animation scheme, supports high-quality, original, and independent animated films intended for cinema audiences. The programme welcomes all animation techniques, including figurative and abstract animation, and projects for audiences of different ages. Eligible films can receive up to €110,000 for films up to 15 minutes or €165,000 for films between 15 and 60 minutes. The Netherlands Film Fund can contribute up to 85% of the total production budget, with an additional distribution contribution of up to €5,000 potentially available. The scheme also encourages international festival exposure and Dutch audience access.

Who can Apply?

Applications are open to eligible independent production companies that are legal entities and have been established for at least two years in the Netherlands, an EU member state, EEA country, or Switzerland. The company must continuously produce and exploit films or other audiovisual productions. For films up to 10 minutes, the producer must have experience as the majority producer responsible for realizing and releasing at least one qualifying independent film. For films from 10 minutes onward, the producer must have experience with at least two qualifying independent animation productions. The producer cannot also be the film’s director or screenwriter.

How to Apply?

Applicants should develop an original animation concept, define the artistic vision and animation technique, and establish a qualified creative team consisting of the producer, director, and screenwriter. Prepare a realistic production budget, audience strategy, and required supporting documents. Applicants should demonstrate relevant animation and filmmaking experience and explain the project’s international and Dutch audience potential. Submit the complete application through the Film Fund Frame application system before the deadline.
