About Organisation
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) is a United Nations humanitarian organization working to combat hunger and strengthen food security and resilience among vulnerable communities. WFP responds to emergencies while also supporting programmes that address the underlying causes of food insecurity, including climate shocks, livelihood vulnerabilities and limited access to resources. In Burundi, WFP works with communities, government institutions and partners to improve food security, strengthen resilience and support sustainable livelihoods. Its programmes can combine humanitarian assistance with longer-term development and climate-resilience approaches. Through partnerships with qualified organizations, WFP seeks to ensure that investments in vulnerable communities generate sustainable and measurable benefits.
About the Grant
The WFP Irrigation Activities Opportunity in Kirundo seeks an experienced NGO to support communities involved in hillside irrigation infrastructure development. The assignment focuses on much more than physical construction. The selected organization will help mobilize communities, organize irrigation users, support agricultural producers, encourage participatory infrastructure management and establish sustainable systems for operating and maintaining irrigation facilities. The initiative aims to improve agricultural production, water access, climate resilience, food security and rural livelihoods. The NGO will work before, during and after infrastructure construction to strengthen community ownership and ensure that irrigation investments produce lasting benefits for farmers and vulnerable agricultural households in Kirundo.
Who can Apply?
The opportunity is intended for an experienced NGO with demonstrated capacity in community-based development, agricultural livelihoods and rural infrastructure support. Applicants should have relevant experience in community mobilization, producer organization, irrigation-user support, participatory infrastructure management, climate resilience, agriculture and natural-resource management. Organizations should demonstrate the ability to work directly with rural communities and farmers throughout the infrastructure project cycle. Strong applicants should also have experience establishing community management structures, supporting sustainable water use and providing post-construction assistance. Applicants must follow WFP’s applicable eligibility, compliance and documentation requirements and demonstrate sufficient organizational and technical capacity to implement the assignment effectively.
How to Apply?
Interested NGOs should first confirm their eligibility and relevant experience in irrigation, agriculture, community mobilization and rural infrastructure. Prepare evidence of previous projects, producer support, participatory management and climate-resilience activities. Explain your approach to community ownership, sustainable irrigation management and post-construction support. Prepare all required organizational and technical documents and submit the complete application according to the official WFP call instructions before 02 September 2026.
