EDGE Protected and Conserved Area Fund
About Organisation
The EDGE of Existence programme is a pioneering global conservation initiative that focuses on protecting Evolutionarily Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species. These species represent a significant portion of the world’s evolutionary history, with few or no close relatives, making them unique in appearance, behaviour, and genetic makeup. Often overlooked and on the brink of extinction, EDGE species are a vital and irreplaceable component of Earth’s biodiversity.
By using a robust scientific framework, the programme identifies and prioritizes these species to bring them to the forefront of conservation efforts. The vision of EDGE is a world where such species flourish, supported by an inclusive, global network of conservation leaders. Its mission is to ignite a movement that recognises and safeguards these unique species by empowering local communities, sharing knowledge, and building collaborative networks. The programme supports sustainable, equitable conservation strategies led by local experts and organizations in biodiversity-rich regions.
EDGE works in partnership with other conservation-focused organisations to accelerate tangible environmental change and preserve the world’s most extraordinary wildlife through strategic protection of their habitats and populations.
About the Grant
The EDGE Protected and Conserved Area Fund is a joint initiative launched by ZSL, Rainforest Trust, and a global alliance of conservation NGOs to safeguard the world’s most evolutionarily distinct and endangered species. With a total fund of US$5 million, this initiative targets the protection and expansion of habitats for EDGE species in tropical and subtropical regions.
The Fund supports local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) working to establish or expand protected and conserved areas for CR (Critically Endangered), EN (Endangered), and VU (Vulnerable) EDGE species, especially those not currently protected within their natural range. Priority is given to projects aligned with existing species action plans and sites identified by the Alliance for Zero Extinction.
Two grant types are available:
-
Rapid Feasibility Awards ($5,000–10,000): For assessing potential sites for protected areas.
-
Full Awards: For the creation or expansion of protected areas.
This collaborative fund is driven by partners including Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust, Re:wild, Synchronicity Earth, On The Edge Conservation, Royal Botanic Gardens Kew, and ZSL. It aims to boost global biodiversity protection through targeted, science-backed conservation in some of the world’s most critical and overlooked regions.
Who can Apply?
Local Civil Society Organizations (CSOs), including NGOs, grassroots conservation groups, and research institutions, are eligible to apply for the EDGE Protected and Conserved Area Fund. The fund supports applicants aiming to create or expand protected and conserved areas for CR and EN EDGE species that are currently unprotected. VU EDGE species projects are also considered if they overlap with CR or EN species.
For Rapid Feasibility Awards, applicants must demonstrate a clear intent to establish a new protected area and meet at least one of the following criteria:
-
Assess land tenure status of the proposed site
-
Survey presence and abundance of CR/EN EDGE species
-
Investigate legal pathways for protected area designation
-
Explore land acquisition or lease opportunities
-
Gauge interest and support from communities and local governments
Projects based on existing IUCN SSC species action plans or addressing unprotected Alliance for Zero Extinction sites will be prioritised, although the latter is not a mandatory requirement.
The fund encourages applications from conservation actors operating in biodiversity hotspots across the tropics and subtropics who are committed to long-term stewardship of key habitats for EDGE species.
How to Apply?
Interested applicants must submit a Concept Note and a GIS file (Shapefile, KML, or KMZ) outlining the proposed protected area. If the project aligns with the fund’s priorities, selected applicants will be invited to submit a detailed application. Proposals are reviewed by EDGE Alliance representatives, with final approval by the Rainforest Trust Board. Applications should be sent to the official EDGE programme email provided.
