About Organisation

Mongabay is an environmental news outlet that provides in-depth reporting on biodiversity, conservation, and environmental issues. Founded with a commitment to high-quality, independent journalism, Mongabay’s mission is to provide accurate, timely information on the state of the world’s ecosystems and the challenges facing the planet. The organization works globally, offering content in multiple languages to engage a wide audience on the importance of conservation and environmental sustainability. Mongabay is also dedicated to providing opportunities for aspiring journalists, especially those in biodiversity hotspots, to develop their reporting skills and gain experience in environmental journalism.

About the Fellowship

The Y. Eva Tan Conservation Reporting Fellowship is designed to build the capacity of young environmental journalists from tropical biodiversity hotspots. The fellowship provides hands-on experience and training in reporting on critical environmental issues, helping fellows develop the skills needed to advance their careers in environmental journalism. Each fellow will produce a series of original stories for Mongabay, working with international editors and building a portfolio. The fellowship also aims to expand Mongabay’s global network by identifying and nurturing emerging journalism talent in tropical regions. The program is hosted by Mongabay’s English and Spanish-language bureaus and offers fellows the opportunity to engage in meaningful reporting while receiving financial support.

Who can Apply?

The fellowship is open to aspiring, early-career environmental journalists from low- to upper-middle-income tropical countries, as classified by the World Bank. High-income countries, such as Singapore and Australia, are excluded. Applicants must have a basic understanding of news reporting, a demonstrated interest in conservation and environmental issues, and a passion for environmental journalism. Applicants must also be able to work remotely and commit to 10 hours per week for the six-month duration of the fellowship. There are no educational requirements, and the program is not linked to any specific university. The fellowship is open to both English- and Spanish-language applicants for Mongabay’s global and Latam bureaus.
