SustainE, in collaboration with participants from the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation’s Humboldt Residency Programme, is dedicated to fostering interdisciplinary and inclusive knowledge systems that support sustainable development. Through various initiatives, they promote research and community partnerships that bridge diverse cultural, scientific, and traditional knowledge bases, particularly focusing on elevating voices from underrepresented regions, such as the Global South. This partnership highlights a commitment to addressing imbalances in global knowledge systems by fostering inclusive frameworks for knowledge sharing and innovation. The Humboldt Residency Programme, renowned for fostering global academic collaborations, enriches this mission by facilitating knowledge exchange that is equitable, impactful, and aimed at long-term sustainability.
About the Prize
This special issue on “Bridging Power and Knowledge: Addressing Global Imbalances in Knowledge Systems for Sustainable Futures” invites submissions that spotlight the integration of traditional, local, and indigenous knowledge with modern scientific research in sustainability. It aims to showcase case studies and equitable partnerships that address power imbalances in knowledge systems while highlighting local solutions with global relevance. Emphasizing climate action, sustainability, and environmental justice, this special issue encourages innovative formats such as research articles, commentaries, and multimedia contributions. The best submission will receive a prize of €1,000, awarded for its innovation and impact in bridging Global North-South knowledge systems.
Who can Apply?
The call for submissions is open to a diverse group of contributors, including researchers, civil society organizations, NGOs, and local collectives, with a particular focus on participants from LMICs in the Global South. Submissions must feature collaborative authorship, with at least one co-author from the local community involved in the research, ensuring authentic representation and contribution acknowledgment. Eligible submissions should directly engage with themes of sustainability, climate action, environmental justice, or knowledge equity, explicitly focusing on the integration of Global North-South knowledge systems. All submissions must reflect original, completed work, rather than proposals for future projects, and can be presented in various formats, including text, video, and visualizations.

Submit original and completed work in the format specified. Include a brief descriptive text (500-1000 words) explaining the project’s context and the local knowledge integration.
