About Organisation

The American Red Cross and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) have jointly created the Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC) as a key reference center. This center aims to drive innovation and knowledge sharing in disaster preparedness. As part of the broader Red Cross Red Crescent (RCRC) network, which includes 13 reference centers worldwide, the GDPC is dedicated to enhancing disaster management capabilities, particularly in the area of preparedness. Its primary goal is to support the Red Cross and Red Crescent national societies by building community resilience through a service-driven and needs-based approach. The GDPC leverages partnerships, research, and practical tools to help communities around the world anticipate and manage risks, adapt to changing environments, and strengthen their capacity to respond to crises.

About the Grant

The Global Disaster Preparedness Center (GDPC) has launched a small research grants program to promote urban climate resilience in low- and middle-income countries. This initiative aims to support original research that contributes to understanding and enhancing resilience in urban settings impacted by climate change. The program encourages studies that can influence policy-making, urban planning, humanitarian work, and community actions. The grants, with a maximum value of $10,000 USD per project, fund research initiatives lasting up to eight months. The final research must be completed by September 30, 2025. Projects should be applicable and provide significant insight, expanding the knowledge base necessary for more resilient urban environments. Proposals must focus on one of three priority topics: community-led climate solutions in cities, socio-economic and institutional influences on urban climate resilience, or the role of urban ecosystems in supporting resilience.

Who can Apply?

The GDPC’s research grants are open to university-affiliated researchers from low- and middle-income countries, including the least developed and upper-middle-income nations. Eligible applicants include graduate students (Master’s and PhD), post-doctoral researchers, and faculty members currently associated with accredited institutions. Research teams, particularly those encouraging inter-institutional collaboration, are encouraged to apply. For student research projects, an experienced supervisor must be identified to offer guidance and oversight throughout the research. The research must be conducted within the applicant’s home country, focusing on one of the defined thematic topics. Additionally, projects must be achievable within an eight-month timeframe, from February to September 30, 2025. Researchers may complete their work in any language; however, the final submission must be in English. Translation expenses, if necessary, should be included in the budget. The proposed research should clearly align with one of the program’s areas of focus, demonstrating a tangible contribution to climate resilience in urban settings.

How to Apply?

Applicants must complete an application form by 12 November 2024 (23:59 UTC). The submission should include a project summary, detailed description (using the provided template), budget, and information about the research team. Supporting documents, like letters of collaboration, should also be included.

Application Deadline

The final deadline for submitting applications is November 12, 2024, by 23:59 UTC.
