The organization is committed to fostering a diverse group of journalists who can investigate and illuminate the complexities of scientific funding and research, ultimately contributing to a more informed public discourse around science. Through its fellowship program, the Good Science Project seeks to support emerging and established writers in producing impactful stories that reveal the intricacies of scientific funding in the United States.
About the Grant
The Good Science Project–Johns Hopkins MA in Science Writing Fellowship offers a $5,000 reporting grant for feature-length articles investigating issues in scientific funding and practices within the United States. This grant aims to support journalistic projects that shed light on the gaps in current funding systems, challenges faced by scientists in securing support for impactful research, and systemic issues that impact the quality of scientific work. Areas of particular interest include the barriers to funding high-impact ideas, the influence of government funding on scientific practices, challenges in attracting talent to scientific fields, bureaucratic hurdles for scientists, and groupthink in funding. The fellowship promotes independent reporting on these topics and encourages awardees to pitch their stories to national media, retaining full rights over their work.
Who can Apply?
The fellowship is open to journalists of any nationality with a focus on scientific funding in the U.S. Both full-time journalists and freelance writers may apply; full-time journalists should clarify how the grant will enable them to cover a story not supported by their employers. Applicants should be capable of producing in-depth, well-researched magazine features of at least 3,000 words. Writers with two published feature articles are preferred, but those lacking this experience may submit a letter detailing their qualifications. International applicants are eligible, provided their proposed story aligns with the fellowship’s focus on U.S. science funding policies. Awardees must complete their articles within six months of receiving the grant, regardless of publication status.
