About Organisation

Nāgrika is a citizen-driven initiative dedicated to empowering people living in small and mid-sized cities across India. It believes that the voices of citizens, especially in smaller urban centers, must be amplified to shape development and decision-making processes that reflect the true needs of communities. Through accessible, high-quality knowledge and practical tools, Nāgrika helps people engage with governance, create resilient cities, and build civic consciousness. The organization focuses on promoting inclusive, authentic, and sustainable urban development by connecting academic knowledge with real-life experiences.

Founded on the principle that informed citizens can contribute meaningfully to their city’s growth, Nāgrika prioritizes local stories, challenges, and perspectives. It provides platforms where communities can voice concerns, collaborate, and take collective action. The organization’s approach is rooted in empathy, critical thinking, and participatory solutions. By nurturing young leaders, Nāgrika aims to create a ripple effect—where local action contributes to broader societal development. Through fellowships, workshops, and community programs, the organization supports individuals who are committed to creating positive change, building deeper connections, and strengthening urban life in India’s smaller cities

About the Grant

The Nāgrika Fellowship is a transformative six-month program aimed at young leaders from small cities in India. It seeks to equip participants with the skills and mindset to become ambassadors for their communities. Fellows engage directly with their cities, learning about local challenges, civic systems, and people’s lived experiences through fieldwork, interactive modules, and assignments. The program emphasizes empathy, curiosity, and community-driven problem-solving.

This fellowship is specifically designed for youth between the ages of 21 and 27 who are enrolled in bachelor’s level education or hold equivalent degrees. Fellows immerse themselves in their city’s public spaces—markets, parks, transit hubs, and residential areas—observing how people navigate daily challenges. They learn to ask meaningful questions, listen actively, and capture authentic stories that reveal the underlying issues affecting their communities.

The goal of the fellowship is to develop local knowledge, foster civic awareness, and create a new generation of urban stewards who prioritize sustainable development. Fellows emerge with hands-on experience in community engagement and urban planning while being supported by mentors and peers throughout their journey.

Who can Apply?

The Nāgrika Fellowship is open to motivated youth living in small cities across India. To be eligible, applicants must be between 21 and 27 years old and reside in a city with a population of less than 20 lakhs as per the 2011 census. The city must be their primary place of residence for the entire six-month duration of the fellowship.

Applicants should be enrolled in a bachelor’s level program or have earned an equivalent degree recognized in India. The fellowship is open to individuals passionate about community engagement, civic development, and urban resilience.

Participants must commit to dedicating 30 to 40 hours per month for the fellowship’s activities, which include fieldwork, research, and collaborative assignments. Fellows are also expected to attend all online sessions and two in-person seminars, designed to build capacity and peer learning networks.

All sessions and materials will be delivered in English, so a working proficiency in the language is required. Applicants must demonstrate a genuine interest in civic issues, leadership potential, and a willingness to learn from and work with diverse groups within their community. This fellowship is ideal for those ready to step up as active citizens and change-makers in their cities.
