About Organisation

The Knight Science Journalism Program at MIT is committed to supporting science journalists from around the world by offering academic-year fellowships. The fellowship gives journalists the opportunity to explore science, technology, and journalism while focusing on a specific area of science. Fellows spend nine months in Cambridge, working on projects that leverage the resources available at MIT and the surrounding area. They gain exposure to world-class research, seminars, and opportunities to develop in-depth knowledge of their chosen field, while receiving mentorship from renowned professionals in the field of science and media.

About the Fellowship

The Knight Science Journalism Academic-Year Fellowship provides an incredible opportunity for 10 science journalists to enhance their professional skills. Fellows immerse themselves in research projects related to science, health, technology, and environmental journalism. During their time in Cambridge, fellows can develop long-form articles, multimedia projects, and conduct in-depth reporting that leverages MIT’s resources. The program includes skills-based workshops, field trips, and access to courses at MIT and Harvard, creating an unparalleled learning environment. Fellows receive stipends, health insurance, and travel support to facilitate their projects.

Who can Apply?

The fellowship is open to full-time journalists with at least three years of experience in science journalism. Applicants must demonstrate their dedication to their craft and should be working in fields such as reporting, editing, illustration, filmmaking, or photojournalism. Part-time journalists and those who have recently completed a fellowship of four months or longer within the last two years are ineligible. International applicants are welcome, and a J-1 visa will be provided for those selected.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit a professional autobiography, resume, a research project proposal, five work samples, and three professional references. The application should demonstrate how the fellowship will benefit their professional development and showcase a project that leverages MIT’s resources.
