About Organisation

The International Peace Research Association (IPRA) Foundation was established with a commitment to fostering peace through scholarly research. Since 2002, the Foundation has supported numerous peace research initiatives globally—from conflict zones in the Middle East and Uganda to marginalized urban areas in the United States. These grants have enabled researchers to study and address pressing issues of violence, injustice, and systemic conflict. In 2013, the IPRA Foundation evolved its original Small Peace Research Grants Program into a more robust Peace Research Grants initiative, providing larger financial support for impactful research. The Foundation remains dedicated to funding independent peace scholars and promoting knowledge that advances peacebuilding. It emphasizes grassroots engagement and recognizes the importance of local knowledge in addressing global conflicts. The grants have empowered individuals working in underrepresented or overlooked regions to bring fresh, research-based insights to peace discourse. The Foundation continues to play a crucial role in bridging academic inquiry and practical peace efforts, supporting research that contributes meaningfully to the promotion of nonviolence, justice, and sustainable development in complex conflict environments.

About the Grant

The IPRA Foundation Peace Research Grants support individuals undertaking innovative peace research projects that contribute to resolving conflict and promoting sustainable peace. Since the transition from the earlier Small Peace Research Grants Program in 2013, the current program offers grants of up to $5,000 to selected applicants. These grants are designed to support small-scale, individual-led research projects rather than institutional or organizational work. The goal is to fund scholars exploring new dimensions of peace and conflict studies in diverse global contexts. The Foundation values research that is deeply rooted in community realities and which fosters practical solutions to issues of violence, social injustice, or conflict resolution. Projects are reviewed through a rigorous selection process involving the Foundation’s board members. Importantly, the grant does not cover overhead, institutional administrative costs, rent, or general living expenses. It is meant to directly support the research work itself. Each applicant is eligible to receive only one grant in their lifetime under this program. Through these research grants, the IPRA Foundation empowers individuals to bring transformative change and innovation in peacebuilding through focused academic inquiry.

Who can Apply?

The IPRA Foundation’s Peace Research Grants are open to individual researchers engaged in peace and conflict studies, particularly those conducting independent or community-based research. Applicants from any part of the world are eligible, provided they have not received a Peace Research Grant or a Small Peace Research Grant from the Foundation in the past. These grants are not awarded to organizations, institutions, or collaborative teams. Instead, they are designed for individuals who are conducting small-scale, original research in areas such as peacebuilding, conflict resolution, social justice, and related fields. The Foundation places a strong emphasis on research that can bring tangible benefits to local communities or contribute to the understanding of conflict transformation. Additionally, budget submissions must align with guidelines—indirect costs, overhead, rent, and normal living expenses are not covered. Only research-related expenses are permitted. All applications must be submitted during the open window of a grant cycle, and incomplete or out-of-window applications will not be considered. This opportunity is best suited for emerging or established peace researchers who seek funding for fieldwork, analysis, or other essential components of a small research initiative.
