About Organisation

The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission in the UK (CSC) is an executive non-departmental public body responsible for delivering the UK government’s international scholarship programme. It supports the development of research, innovation, and sustainable solutions aligned with global development priorities, particularly within the Commonwealth. Established in 1960, the CSC has funded over 31,000 scholars, helping them gain the knowledge, skills, and networks required to address key global challenges. The CSC operates under the Commonwealth Scholarship and Fellowship Plan (CSFP) and is primarily funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), Department for Education, and UK university partners. Through various study, research, and professional development programmes, the CSC fosters international collaboration and builds capacity in developing countries. Its mission is to support exceptional individuals from diverse backgrounds who show the potential to become leaders and change-makers in their home nations.

About the Grant

The Commonwealth Distance Learning Scholarship is one of the three Master’s programmes administered by the CSC. It aims to support talented students from eligible Commonwealth countries to pursue part-time taught Master’s degrees with UK universities while residing in their home countries. Funded by the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), this initiative reflects the UK’s commitment to both international development and educational accessibility. The programme empowers recipients with advanced knowledge and skills in fields critical to sustainable development. These scholarships are aligned with six core development themes defined by the CSC and are a unique opportunity for motivated individuals to access UK-quality education remotely. By facilitating this access, the scholarship contributes to building leadership and innovation capacity in low and middle-income Commonwealth countries.

Who can Apply?

Applicants must be citizens of, hold refugee status in, or be British Protected Persons from eligible Commonwealth countries. They must be permanently residing in a developing Commonwealth country and unable to fund the proposed programme without the scholarship. A first degree of at least upper second class (2:1) standard is generally required, although candidates with a lower qualification may be considered if they possess relevant work experience. The scholarship is open only to those applying for part-time Master’s courses through distance learning at approved UK universities. Applicants must also demonstrate their potential to contribute to sustainable development and commit to returning and applying their learning to benefit their home communities. The CSC values equal opportunity and encourages applications from a wide range of backgrounds.
