About Organisation
The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is an independent federal agency of the United States that supports research, education, preservation and public programs in the humanities. Through its Division of Collections & Infrastructure, NEH supports organizations working to preserve physical and digital humanities collections and make them accessible to researchers, educators, students and the public. The division funds projects involving libraries, archives, museums, colleges, universities and organizations providing preservation services or training. Its programs help protect cultural heritage materials while strengthening the infrastructure, expertise and resources needed for long-term preservation and public access.
About the Grant
The NEH Collections Stewardship Program provides funding for projects that preserve and improve access to physical and digital collections important to humanities research, teaching and public engagement. Supported activities include conservation, preservation planning, collection storage and care, archival arrangement and description, cataloguing, digitization, transcription, indexing, digital preservation and enhancement of established digital humanities resources. The program can also support preservation services and education or training for students and professionals working with humanities collections. Awards range from $50,000 to $500,000, with single organizations eligible for up to $350,000 and consortium applications eligible for up to $500,000.
Who can Apply?
Eligible applicants include 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations, accredited public or nonprofit institutions of higher education, state and local governments and their agencies, and federally recognized Native American Tribal governments. Projects must focus on the preservation and availability of physical or digital collections important to humanities research, teaching or public engagement. Eligible organizations should have the institutional capacity, personnel and infrastructure necessary to complete the proposed work. For-profit organizations, individuals and foreign organizations are not eligible. Applicants must also complete the required federal registrations, including SAM.gov and Grants.gov, before submitting an application.
How to Apply?
Confirm your organization’s eligibility and identify a significant physical or digital humanities collection requiring preservation or improved access. Develop a project addressing a specific stewardship need such as conservation, digitization, cataloguing or digital preservation. Prepare the required application materials according to the NEH Notice of Funding Opportunity. Ensure active SAM.gov and Grants.gov registrations, complete the application package and submit it through Grants.gov before the deadline.
