About Organisation

The Branco Weiss Fellowship – Society in Science fosters a community of outstanding young scientists committed to pushing research beyond conventional boundaries. This prestigious fellowship allows postdoctoral researchers to pursue their unique scientific visions globally, free from mainstream constraints. Awarded for up to five years, the fellowship encourages innovative projects across all scientific disciplines. Additionally, fellows engage in meaningful dialogue with society, aiming to communicate their findings beyond their fields of expertise, thus bridging the gap between science and social relevance.

About the Grant

The Branco Weiss Fellowship provides exceptional postdoctoral researchers with the resources to conduct pioneering scientific projects. Designed for innovative ideas that challenge traditional research paradigms, the fellowship is open to applicants from diverse scientific backgrounds. Each project is funded for a maximum of CHF 600,000, covering legitimate research costs, including salaries, equipment, travel, and personnel. The fellowship comprises two phases: a pioneering phase lasting two and a half years, followed by an exploitation phase, encouraging fellows to pursue faculty positions without terminating the grant.

Who can Apply?

Eligible candidates for the Branco Weiss Fellowship must hold a PhD by January 15, 2025, and have obtained it within the five years preceding that date. Applicants should not have held a faculty-equivalent position and must propose research that deviates from mainstream approaches. A strong track record of scientific achievement is essential, alongside a commitment to addressing broader social, cultural, political, or economic issues through their work. Previous applicants are welcome to reapply if not selected.

How to Apply?

To apply for the fellowship, prepare a letter of motivation, a detailed research proposal, your CV, an invitation letter from a prospective host, copies of your best publications, and five reviewer suggestions. All documents must be submitted as PDFs.
