About the Grant

The Biotechnology Ignition Grant (BIG) scheme by BIRAC provides funding to encourage the commercialization of innovative ideas in life sciences and biotechnology. This grant targets scientist entrepreneurs, research institutes, and start-ups by offering up to INR 50 Lakhs for projects with commercialization potential. The grant duration is typically up to 18 months, and its aim is to support early-stage research, upscale concepts, and promote enterprise formation, particularly through start-ups.

Who can Apply?

The applicant must be an Indian citizen and either an incubatee at a recognized incubator or the promoter of a registered company with a functional R&D laboratory. They must also submit a recommendation from their incubator. Non-profit organizations and research institutions are eligible with an NOC. Applicants from LLPs, however, are ineligible. The scheme requires full-time commitment from the project promoter to ensure the effective execution of the research.

How to Apply?

To apply, the applicant must submit a proposal to BIRAC through one of its BIG partners. Ensure to meet all eligibility criteria, including incubator recommendation and necessary documentation for the project.

Application Deadline

The call for proposals is open twice a year, with deadlines typically 45 days after the call is announced on 1st January and 1st July.
