The Department of National Defence (DND) and the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) are supporting innovation that can strengthen sustainable operations in Canada’s Arctic and sub-Arctic regions. Through the Innovation for Defence Excellence and Security (IDEaS) program, the Government of Canada provides funding to innovators developing technologies that address defence and operational challenges. This initiative focuses on practical solutions that can help Relocatable Transportable Camps operate independently while meeting Canadian environmental and health requirements. The programme creates opportunities for individuals, researchers, businesses, non-profit organizations and other eligible applicants working on advanced water, wastewater and waste-management technologies for challenging northern environments.
About the Grant
The Sustainable Northern Operations Water and Waste Grant supports novel, integrated technologies that enable Canadian Armed Forces camps to manage water and waste independently in Arctic and sub-Arctic environments. Proposed solutions should integrate water purification, wastewater treatment and solid-waste reduction for camps of up to 50 personnel. Technologies must function reliably in extreme northern conditions, including temperatures as low as -40°C, while significantly reducing resupply requirements. The challenge encourages solutions at different stages of development, from early-stage technologies through mature prototypes. Successful innovations may progress through additional funding stages as their Technology Readiness Level (TRL) advances..
Who can Apply?
The challenge is open to individuals, academic institutions, not-for-profit organizations, municipal governments, provincial and territorial organizations, and private-sector organizations. Federal and provincial Crown corporations are not eligible for funding. Applicants should propose innovative technologies capable of supporting sustainable operations in Arctic or sub-Arctic environments. Solutions should address water purification, wastewater treatment and solid-waste reduction while operating under severe northern conditions. Proposed technologies should also be modular, transportable and maintainable using commonly available tools and trades. Solutions are expected to reduce resupply volumes and frequencies by at least 75% compared with the specified baseline and meet applicable Canadian environmental and health standards.
How to Apply?
Applicants should review the challenge requirements and prepare a proposal describing their technology, development stage, technical approach, expected outcomes and ability to address northern operational requirements. Proposals must be submitted through the designated Government of Canada procurement process and follow the applicable solicitation requirements. Applicants should demonstrate how their solution integrates water purification, wastewater treatment and solid-waste management while operating reliably in Arctic conditions. The application should also explain the technology’s readiness level and development needs.
