About Organisation

The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) is a prominent U.S. federal agency committed to protecting the health of all citizens and providing essential human services, especially for those least able to help themselves. The Fogarty International Center (FIC) within DHHS advances global health through research and partnerships between U.S. and international investigators. It also fosters training to address global health needs. Several institutes within DHHS, including the National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Eye Institute (NEI), and National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), support initiatives to develop and implement innovative health interventions. Their missions include advancing medical research, creating accessible technologies, and improving health outcomes for global populations, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs).

About the Grant

The “Mobile Health – Technology and Outcomes in Low and Middle Income Countries” grant encourages research to develop, validate, and test innovative mobile health (mHealth) tools for LMICs. The grant funds projects that address health problems using new technologies, platforms, and systems suited for LMIC settings. Applicants must address both phases of the grant: R21 for initial feasibility studies and R33 for larger-scale validation and effectiveness studies. The initiative aims to catalyze innovation, develop generalizable mHealth principles, and strengthen research capacity in LMICs.

Who can Apply?

Eligible applicants include public and private higher education institutions, non-profits, small businesses, for-profit organizations, local and regional governments, tribal governments, independent school districts, faith-based and community-based organizations, and foreign organizations. LMIC entities, including Indian institutions, are encouraged to apply as they qualify under the LMIC criteria. Non-domestic entities or foreign components of U.S. organizations are also eligible. The eligibility emphasizes partnerships between U.S. and LMIC researchers, but applications from LMIC entities do not require U.S. partners.

How to Apply?

Prepare an application addressing both R21 and R33 phases. Ensure alignment with grant objectives and submit through the appropriate U.S. federal grant system.

The deadline for application is February 21, 2025.
