About Organisation
The Biocodex Microbiota Foundation (BMF) is an international scientific foundation dedicated to advancing knowledge about the human microbiota and its role in health and disease. Through research funding, scientific initiatives and international collaborations, the Foundation supports researchers investigating the complex relationships between microorganisms and human health. Its annual international research calls focus on specific themes selected by an International Scientific Committee. From 2025, BMF expanded its annual research programme to include proposals exploring microbiota and its implications for Women’s Health and Disease, encouraging both fundamental and clinical research.
About the Grant
The Microbiota & Women’s Health International Call for Projects 2027 supports research investigating interactions between male and female genital microbiomes and their relationship with vaginal dysbiosis. The current theme explores mechanisms, transmission and impacts of these microbiome interactions. Research may examine the role of penile microbiota in bacterial vaginosis, microbial transmission during sexual activity, persistence of BV-associated organisms and interventions that influence microbial ecology and recurrence. Both fundamental and clinical research proposals are eligible, with projects able to run for up to three years.
Who can Apply?
The grant is open internationally to researchers holding an MD, PhD or Pharm-D and working in relevant fields such as gynaecology, obstetrics, microbiology, infectious diseases, internal medicine or oncology. Applicants must be institutionally affiliated with a university, hospital or other eligible research setting because funding is awarded to institutions rather than directly to individuals. Principal investigators who previously received a BMF Women’s Health International Grant cannot reapply for three years. Members of the Women’s Health International Scientific Committee and their laboratory members are also excluded from applying as Principal Investigators.
How to Apply?
Eligible researchers should develop a research proposal aligned with the year’s theme on male-female genital microbiome interactions. Projects may use fundamental or clinical approaches and should clearly explain the research question, methodology, expected contribution and relevance to women’s health. Applicants must submit through the Foundation’s designated application process with institutional affiliation and the required supporting documentation. Funding can be used for eligible equipment, operating expenses and staffing, while institutional overheads are limited to 10%.
