About Organisation

The Japan Foundation is Japan’s only institution dedicated to comprehensive international cultural exchange. It operates programmes covering arts and cultural exchange, Japanese-language education, and Japanese studies and global partnerships. Through its Japanese Studies programmes, the Foundation supports overseas researchers and scholars conducting research related to Japan. The JF-JSA-ASEAN Fellowship is implemented with support from the Japanese Studies Association of Southeast Asia (JSA-ASEAN) and is designed to strengthen academic connections between Southeast Asia and Japan while developing the next generation of researchers in Japanese studies.


About the Grant

The JF-JSA-ASEAN Fellowship Program provides Southeast Asian researchers in Japanese studies with opportunities to conduct research and participate in academic exchange activities in Japan. The programme covers humanities and social sciences and has two main applicant categories: doctoral candidates and researchers. Doctoral candidates can undertake research stays of 4–12 months, while researchers can choose a short-term stay of 21–89 days or a long-term stay of 4–12 months. The programme provides airfare and financial allowances to support eligible fellows during their research period in Japan.

Who can Apply?

The fellowship is open to Ph.D. candidates at graduate schools in Southeast Asia and researchers affiliated with institutions in Southeast Asia who are conducting research related to Japan, including comparative research. Doctoral candidates must have completed, or be expected to complete by the fellowship start, the necessary coursework. Researchers must hold a Ph.D. or equivalent professional experience. Applicants must secure arrangements with advisors or research associates in Japan by the application deadline, be proficient in Japanese or English, and be able to stay continuously in Japan for the fellowship period.

How to Apply?

Applicants should download the official application documents, complete them according to the Japan Foundation’s instructions, and upload the required materials through the Online Application Portal. Applicants must also arrange the required reference forms and affiliation documentation. The application requires the relevant application form, applicant information, project information and other supporting documents. Two reference forms and a Letter of Affiliation are required.
