About Organisation

The Climate Intervention Environmental Impact Fund (CIEIF) is a funding initiative that supports independent assessment of the potential environmental and social impacts of climate-intervention technologies. The Fund aims to encourage responsible research and development by ensuring that proposed field tests are accompanied by appropriate environmental analysis, predictive modelling and consultation with potentially affected communities and stakeholders.

About the Grant

The sixth grant round of CIEIF provides funding for projects preparing to conduct small-scale field tests of innovative climate-intervention technologies. The programme is designed to support the essential assessment work that should take place before a proposed intervention is tested in the field. Funding must primarily support at least one of three activities: environmental impact assessment, predictive impact modelling, or engagement with potentially affected stakeholders, including local communities and government agencies. Projects may involve technologies such as enhanced rock weathering, marine carbon dioxide removal, biochar-based approaches and other climate-intervention methods. The Fund places particular importance on the potential scalability of the proposed innovation and the publication of findings through a peer-reviewed journal or an independently peer-reviewed report.

Who can Apply?

The opportunity is open to investigators, research teams and organisations worldwide working on climate-intervention technologies that are approaching the stage of a small-scale field test. Applicants must clearly identify the applying entity, provide its website and explain the technical readiness, proposed location and potential environmental and social implications of the intervention. Proposals must demonstrate how the requested US$75,000 will be used for environmental impact assessment, predictive modelling and/or stakeholder engagement. General climate adaptation, conventional renewable-energy projects or broad sustainability activities that do not involve a proposed climate-intervention field test do not fit the stated funding purpose.

How to Apply?

There is no standard application form or template. Applicants must prepare a grant request in English, not exceeding 20 single-spaced pages in 12-point font, addressing the ten areas specified in the official guidelines. These include the project team, technical background, proposed field test, required permits, prior research, independent consultants, proposed budget, other funding sources, insurance and willingness to publish the results. Before sending the completed application, applicants must contact the Fund Manager, Peter T. Jenkins, at info@CIEIF.org to discuss the appropriate submission method.
Important application restriction: CIEIF explicitly states that AI-generated content in cover letters and applications is not acceptable. It says applications in which AI use is detected will be rejected and the applicant barred from future applications. Applicants must prepare their own application materials and follow the Fund’s instructions.
