About Organisation
The Pulitzer Center is a nonprofit journalism organisation established in 2006 to support innovative and consequential reporting on important global issues. It works with journalists, educators, media partners and communities across more than 80 countries. The organisation combines investigative journalism with audience engagement and civic participation to encourage informed public discussion and real-world impact. Climate and environmental reporting is a major area of its work, covering issues such as ecosystems, climate change, labour, natural resources and communities affected by environmental challenges.
About the Grant
The Global South Civil Society Microgrants programme supports grassroots and civil society initiatives that use Pulitzer Center-supported journalism to strengthen community awareness, dialogue and action. Grants of US$2,000 to US$4,000 can support existing activities or new projects. Proposed initiatives should engage with the Pulitzer Center’s climate and environment reporting, particularly themes involving rainforests, oceans, or the intersection of climate and labour. Projects can use community engagement, creative expression, public dialogue, campaigns or other innovative approaches.
Who can Apply?
The opportunity is intended for grassroots organisations, community educators, civil society organisations, coalitions, youth movements and other groups working around journalism, civic rights and active citizenship in the Global South. Applicants should have previous experience developing and implementing civic engagement activities, particularly in Africa, Latin America or Southeast Asia. Organisations should demonstrate relevant experience with the selected climate or environmental issue and the ability to collaborate effectively with communities and partner organisations. Applicants should also have sufficient operational capacity to responsibly manage an international microgrant.
How to Apply?
Applicants should develop a civic engagement project that meaningfully incorporates at least one published Pulitzer Center-supported story. The proposal should explain the selected reporting, community or audience involved, proposed activities, expected outcomes and how the project will contribute to awareness, dialogue, representation or action. Activities may include community organising, creative campaigns, public performances, knowledge-sharing sessions, dialogues or other locally relevant approaches.
