The Paul Hamlyn Foundation (PHF) is a UK-based independent grant-making foundation established in 1987. The Foundation works towards a just future where everyone, particularly young people, can realise their potential and enjoy fulfilling and creative lives. Its strategic priorities include investing in young people, migration and integration, arts access and participation, education through the arts, nurturing ideas and people, and creating opportunities for people and communities in India. Through its grant-making, PHF supports organisations and initiatives seeking meaningful social change. Its India-focused work emphasises community-centred development, local leadership, systemic change, organisational capacity and improved opportunities for disadvantaged communities.
About the Grant
The India Fund supports small Indian NGOs working with vulnerable communities in priority geographical areas of India. The fund is based on the principle that communities should be central to development and that people experiencing disadvantage should play an active role in identifying problems, designing solutions and leading change. Funding aims to encourage community-centred development programmes, strengthen community control over development processes and support approaches addressing systemic inequality. The fund also seeks to strengthen the capacity of organisations and individuals facilitating community-led change. Grants range from ₹10 lakh to ₹40 lakh and are intended for eligible locally based Indian NGOs with the required FCRA registration.
Who can Apply?
The India Fund specifically supports local Indian NGOs with FCRA registration. Eligible organisations should generally be locally based in the communities they serve and work directly with vulnerable or disadvantaged communities. Applicants should demonstrate a commitment to long-term improvements in community wellbeing and meaningful community participation in decision-making and development. Organisations should have relevant connections with panchayats in rural areas or municipalities in urban areas. They should also take steps to reduce their environmental impact, improve local ecology, promote gender equality and support people of all genders to participate in change-making. FCRA registration is mandatory, and PHF does not work through the FCRA prior-permission route.
How to Apply?
Confirm that your organisation is an eligible Indian NGO with FCRA registration and operates locally within the communities it serves. Develop a community-centred proposal demonstrating how disadvantaged communities will participate in designing and leading change. Explain the intended systemic impact, organisational capacity-building approach, environmental considerations and commitment to gender equality. Prepare the required organisational and project information and submit the application through the Paul Hamlyn Foundation’s official India Fund process before the deadline.
