The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) is responsible for Italy’s foreign relations and international cooperation. About the Grant
The Italian Bilateral Scientific Cooperation Award recognizes an Italian scientist working in the United States who has made an outstanding contribution to scientific cooperation between Italy and the US. The selected awardee receives approximately EUR 15,000 to support a research residency in Italy lasting at least three months. The award supports expenses such as accommodation, meals and laboratory-related research costs, while round-trip airfare and insurance are covered separately. The opportunity is open across scientific and technological disciplines. Its broader objective is to strengthen Italy-US research collaboration, facilitate scientific mobility and create opportunities for researchers to develop long-term connections with Italian research institutions.
Who can Apply?
This is a nomination-based award, meaning scientists cannot nominate themselves. Candidates must be Italian scientists currently active in the United States, resident there since at least 1 January 2021, and working independently. They must have 3–7 years of post-PhD experience and be under 40 years of age when the call is published. Candidates must also demonstrate significant contributions to scientific cooperation between Italy and the United States. Nominations must be submitted by an eminent scientist holding a leadership position at an academic or research institution. Immediate family members of candidates are also not eligible to submit nominations.
How to Apply?
Eligible candidates cannot self-nominate. An eminent scientist holding a leadership position at an academic or research institution must submit the nomination. The nomination should demonstrate the candidate’s scientific achievements and contribution to Italy-US cooperation. Candidates should identify their preferred Italian research environment and, if selected, provide a host-institution commitment letter confirming a research stay of at least three months. Submit the nomination according to the official MAECI instructions before 18 September 2026.
