Call for Grant Applications –
Wild Animal Initiative’s Discovery Grants Program
Application Deadline:
November 1, 2024
About Organisation
Wild Animal Initiative is dedicated to advancing science that improves the welfare of wild animals. While most animals live in the wild, we have limited understanding of their well-being and the factors that affect their quality of life. Wild Animal Initiative works to accelerate research in wild animal welfare science, aiming to identify and mitigate the causes of suffering in the wild. Through scientific research, the organization hopes to develop effective, responsible interventions that positively impact wild animals. By building a foundation of evidence-based knowledge, Wild Animal Initiative supports efforts to enhance the welfare of wild animals globally. The organization plays a vital role in fostering the growth of this emerging field, helping to ensure that wild animals receive the care and attention they deserve in scientific studies.
About the Grant
The Discovery Grants by Wild Animal Initiative provide funding for research projects that expand knowledge on wild animal welfare. The program emphasizes validating new methods and applying them to diverse ecosystems. Projects should align with Wild Animal Initiative’s research priorities and demonstrate cost-effectiveness. The grants aim to support projects that deliver uniquely welfare-relevant outcomes. Researchers are encouraged to propose projects within broad, welfare-focused themes, contributing to the understanding and enhancement of wild animal welfare through evidence-based interventions. Funding is geared towards activities directly linked to animal welfare research, ensuring meaningful impact.
Who can Apply?
The Discovery Grants are open to anyone, with a preference for early career researchers, such as postdocs and PhD students, aiming to build a long-term research career in wild animal welfare. Established researchers wishing to diversify their portfolio to include wild animal welfare are also encouraged. Eligible projects include standalone studies or those that expand existing projects to encompass wild animal welfare. The principal investigator must be affiliated with a research institution, and collaborators must reside in the countries where fieldwork occurs. Projects led by NGOs must ensure registration in the country where the work will be conducted.
