About Organisation

Visions sud est, supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), is a program dedicated to fostering the production and distribution of feature-length films from the South and East regions, with the goal of encouraging independent cinema globally. The program specifically focuses on supporting projects that offer authentic local narratives and perspectives, providing vital funding for both fiction and documentary films. This initiative ensures that filmmakers from eligible countries can tell stories that resonate with audiences within and beyond their borders, while also advancing their creative reach in international markets. In addition to production and post-production support, visions sud est promotes the distribution of these films within Switzerland and Liechtenstein. The program aims to serve as a “catalyst” in the film industries of the countries of origin, making it an invaluable resource for filmmakers looking to expand the reach of their work. The support from visions sud est not only bolsters the financial foundation of selected projects but also ensures that these productions have a platform for Swiss and regional distribution, promoting cultural exchange and diversity in the cinema.

About the Grant

The visions sud est grant offers critical funding to independent filmmakers, supporting 10 to 12 new projects per year in two annual rounds. The program is dedicated to promoting the production and post-production of feature-length (70+ minutes) fiction and documentary films created for cinema. Selected projects must come from eligible regions in the South and East, where they are expected to strengthen local film industries through authentic storytelling. The grant amounts vary depending on the project’s format and stage, with fiction films eligible for up to 50,000 Swiss francs for production and 20,000 Swiss francs for post-production, while documentaries may receive up to 20,000 Swiss francs for production and 10,000 Swiss francs for post-production. Additionally, development support of up to 5,000 Swiss francs is available for projects at an early stage. This grant plays a catalytic role in enhancing local film production while providing international distribution opportunities in Switzerland and Liechtenstein. Projects must secure 30% of their budget before applying, and the visions sud est grant mandates that Swiss distribution rights be granted in exchange for funding.

Who can Apply?

To be eligible for the visions sud est grant, filmmakers must meet specific criteria regarding the project, location, and production setup. Only feature-length fiction and documentary films of at least 70 minutes are accepted, and short films or TV/web films are not eligible. The main producer applying for funding must be based in an eligible country and have an established track record of film production in that country. Likewise, the film’s director must be a citizen of an eligible country, ensuring that the project’s creative team is rooted in the region. Filming should occur predominantly within an eligible country, using local or regional languages. Additionally, 30% of the project’s budget should be secured before submitting an application. Visions sud est requires that projects seeking production support be ready to begin filming within 18 months of funding approval, while those seeking post-production support must present a first cut along with a post-production plan. Notably, projects previously funded at the production stage are not eligible for post-production funding from visions sud est.
