About Organisation

The Tropical Rainforests programme is part of the Waterloo Foundation’s Environment Fund, which prioritizes the protection of tropical rainforests due to their importance in climate regulation, biodiversity, and supporting livelihoods. Tropical forests make up nearly 30% of Earth’s landmass and provide essential ecosystem services. Despite their significance, they face destruction due to human activities, with deforestation accounting for a significant portion of global carbon emissions. The foundation seeks to support projects that protect these forests through innovative strategies and practical solutions, addressing deforestation drivers and promoting sustainable livelihoods.

About the Grant

The Tropical Rainforests programme offers funding for initiatives focused on preserving tropical rainforests, either through local, hands-on projects or broader strategic efforts. Local projects must aim to protect areas of at least 10,000 hectares, focusing on overcoming local deforestation drivers, managing forest areas, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for forest communities. Strategic projects address global deforestation drivers, such as forest policy advocacy or supply chain improvements. The foundation supports initiatives that ensure long-term forest protection and are impactful in both local and global contexts.

Who can Apply?

The Waterloo Foundation prioritizes UK-based charities for funding, particularly those working with local NGOs in tropical rainforest areas. Non-UK organizations may apply if they provide a reference from a UK-based contact who can vouch for their work. Eligible applicants must have a clear, measurable project focus, whether local or strategic, to protect tropical rainforests and address deforestation. Organizations must demonstrate successful outcomes from past projects and be able to manage projects with sustainability in mind. Applicants should also have the capacity to manage the proposed project, including necessary monitoring and reporting.

How to Apply?

Submit a proposal, outlining project details and meeting the foundation’s guidelines. Proposals should be about 2-3 A4 pages, highlighting the project’s title, objectives, expected outcomes, timeline, and budget details.
