Call for Grant Applications –
the Global EbA Fund
About Organisation
The Global EbA Fund is a funding mechanism designed to support innovative, catalytic, and inclusive projects that promote Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to enhance climate resilience. It is implemented by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), with financial support from the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety, and Consumer Protection (BMUV). The Fund focuses on creating an enabling environment for EbA implementation by addressing policy and governance gaps, building awareness, and improving access to sustainable financing mechanisms. It aligns with global climate and biodiversity objectives, contributing to frameworks such as The Sharm-El-Sheikh Adaptation Agenda, the IPCC Sixth Assessment Report, and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. By supporting initiatives that integrate biodiversity and ecosystem services into climate adaptation strategies, the Global EbA Fund plays a crucial role in overcoming barriers to scaling up EbA, fostering policy mainstreaming, and encouraging private-sector investment. The Fund prioritizes projects that contribute to its strategic objectives while ensuring sustainability, innovation, and effective partnerships with local communities and institutions.
About the Grant
The Global EbA Fund supports nature-based solutions that enhance climate resilience by leveraging biodiversity and ecosystem services. It is strategically positioned to contribute to global climate and biodiversity agendas by promoting sustainable adaptation measures. The Fund helps address barriers to scaling up EbA by investing in knowledge-building, governance improvements, policy mainstreaming, and innovative financing mechanisms. It specifically targets projects that align with one of its three strategic objectives: raising awareness and enhancing institutional capacities, addressing governance and policy gaps, and expanding access to sustainable finance.
Projects funded through the Global EbA Fund must focus on creating enabling environments rather than direct field implementation. However, field activities may be included if they are well-justified within the proposal. The Fund supports projects under two tracks: a general track for catalytic EbA proposals and a thematic track for sector-specific EbA initiatives. To qualify, projects must be innovative, contribute to long-term EbA mainstreaming, and align with one strategic objective and a maximum of two action pillars. Eligible projects can span areas such as policy development, education, value chain integration, climate risk assessments, traditional knowledge application, and technological innovations for adaptation.
