About Organisation

Sacatar is an international residency program dedicated to supporting artists and creative individuals in addressing global contemporary challenges. Its mission is to provide time, space, and a nurturing community where creativity thrives. Located on the island of Itaparica in Bahia, Brazil, Sacatar offers an immersive environment that encourages cultural exchange, collaboration, and exploration. Unlike programs that emphasize completed works, Sacatar focuses on the process, fostering experimentation, fresh ideas, and meaningful connections. Artists are given opportunities to engage with diverse communities, discover natural beauty, and explore Brazil’s vibrant cultural scene. The organization welcomes creatives of all backgrounds, ages, nationalities, and disciplines, embracing diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values. With a stunning beachfront property and dedicated studios, Sacatar enables artists to concentrate on their work while benefiting from shared experiences with fellow residents. Meals, accommodations, and logistical support are provided free of cost, ensuring accessibility for all selected artists. Through its residencies, Sacatar has become a catalyst for creative growth, encouraging participants to begin projects, form collaborations, and reimagine possibilities. By bringing together artists from across the world in Bahia, Sacatar continues to play a transformative role in shaping artistic practices and nurturing innovative contributions to contemporary culture.

About the Grant

The Sacatar Fellowship 2026 Open Call offers fully funded artist residencies on the island of Itaparica, Bahia, Brazil. This unique program provides artists with accommodation, meals, individual studio spaces, and logistical support, along with opportunities to connect with local communities and Brazil’s vibrant cultural scenes. Each residency spans approximately eight weeks, with five sessions held annually. Around six to eight artists are selected per session, fostering a balance between individual projects and collective experiences. The fellowship emphasizes both self-directed studio work and shared activities that encourage cultural exchange and collaboration. While the residency begins with structured orientations, tours, and networking events, artists have the freedom to shape their time according to their creative needs. The fellowship concludes with an Open Studios event, where participants share works-in-progress with the local community. Sacatar maintains a low-tech environment, focusing on simplicity and creativity rather than heavy reliance on equipment, so artists are encouraged to bring their own tools when necessary. All costs for housing, meals (with a few exceptions), laundry, and transportation from Salvador airport are covered. Through this fellowship, Sacatar provides a nurturing space for experimentation, dialogue, and artistic development in a serene yet culturally rich environment.

Who can Apply?

The Sacatar Fellowship is open to artists and creative practitioners of all nationalities, ages, and disciplines. The program adopts an inclusive definition of creativity, welcoming applicants from diverse fields including visual arts, performing arts, literature, design, interdisciplinary practices, and beyond. Sacatar is committed to equity and inclusion, ensuring that no applicant faces discrimination based on race, religion, gender, national origin, age, marital status, disability, sexual orientation, ancestry, or HIV status. Applicants are expected to propose self-directed projects that align with their creative interests and goals. Selected artists should be able to engage independently in their work while also participating in the residency’s communal activities. Since Sacatar emphasizes experimentation and process over finished outcomes, applicants do not need to present finalized projects but should demonstrate openness to collaboration, exchange, and exploration. Fellows are required to commit to the full residency session, arriving and departing on the scheduled dates. As the residency environment is intentionally low-tech, artists needing specific equipment must bring it themselves or source it locally in Salvador. Ultimately, the program seeks individuals who are motivated, flexible, and eager to benefit from both solitude and shared creative engagement.
