About Organisation

Praja Foundation is a non-partisan, non-profit organisation that has been committed to enabling accountable governance since its inception in 1997. It works towards empowering citizens with data-driven knowledge and actionable insights to foster informed civic participation beyond periodic elections. Praja aims to bridge the information gap between the government and citizens by making governance more transparent and participatory.

Praja collaborates closely with elected representatives, government bodies, academic institutions, and civil society to create a more informed and engaged citizenry. Through extensive research, advocacy, and capacity-building initiatives, the organisation promotes democratic engagement, policy transparency, and inclusive governance processes.

Its initiatives span across themes such as urban governance, education, health, and climate action, all aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and responsiveness. By providing platforms for dialogue and partnerships between stakeholders, Praja aspires to build robust democratic systems rooted in accountability and sustainability.

With a strong track record of working in major cities across India, Praja continues to play a catalytic role in shaping effective governance frameworks. Through its latest initiatives, it is expanding its impact into climate resilience and urban development in northeastern regions, particularly in the rapidly urbanising cities of Assam.

About the Grant

Praja Foundation invites applications for its 2025 Governance & Climate Action Fellowship in Assam, launched under the project ‘Systemic Changes for Climate Adaptation.’ This full-time, paid fellowship spans ten months and will be implemented in the cities of Guwahati and Dibrugarh.

With Assam undergoing rapid urbanisation, these cities are facing significant climate-related challenges, including recurrent urban flooding. Through this initiative, Praja aims to foster climate-resilient urban governance while building partnerships across government bodies, elected representatives, academia, and the civil society. The goal is to drive systemic change through coordinated efforts in capacity building and outreach.

Fellows will engage deeply with urban governance frameworks, working directly with councillors, MLAs, city/state officials, and community groups. They will facilitate awareness, training, and collaborative engagements with colleges and local organisations, aiming to enhance grassroots understanding of climate issues.

This on-ground exposure will enable selected youth and students to gain practical experience in governance systems while actively contributing to sustainable development. The fellowship offers a platform to participate in real-world governance processes, make meaningful interventions in policy and community action, and become change agents for democratic, climate-resilient urban transformation.

Who can Apply?

This fellowship is ideal for motivated youth and college students who are passionate about urban governance, climate action, and public policy. Applicants should demonstrate a strong interest in civic engagement, sustainable development, and community-driven solutions.

Eligible candidates must:

  • Be between 21–30 years of age (preferred age group).

  • Be fluent in English, and preferably Assamese or local languages of Assam.

  • Be graduates or enrolled in undergraduate/postgraduate programmes in relevant fields such as political science, environmental studies, urban planning, social work, public administration, or related disciplines.

  • Have strong communication, teamwork, and community engagement skills.

  • Be willing to commit full-time to an on-site programme in Guwahati or Dibrugarh for ten months starting July 2025.

  • Be proactive, empathetic, and open to working in diverse stakeholder environments including government offices, academic institutions, and civil society organisations.

Prior experience in volunteering, social initiatives, policy research, or climate-related work will be considered an added advantage, though it is not mandatory. The programme encourages applications from individuals with a passion for social impact and a desire to contribute meaningfully to India’s climate adaptation efforts at the city level.
