PFAN’s mission is to develop clean energy markets by supporting businesses that contribute to climate change mitigation and adaptation. The organization aims to bridge the gap between entrepreneurs and investors, mobilizing private capital to advance the Paris Agreement on Climate Change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). By providing guidance, PFAN helps businesses overcome financial and operational barriers, enabling them to scale up and drive impactful environmental solutions. PFAN operates in low- and middle-income countries, focusing on regions such as Sub-Saharan Africa, Central, South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Eastern Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands. The organization takes a technology-neutral approach, supporting various clean energy solutions without prioritizing one over another. Its ultimate goal is to accelerate the transition to sustainable energy while empowering entrepreneurs with the resources and expertise needed to succeed in their ventures.

About the Grant

PFAN provides financial and technical support to clean energy and climate adaptation projects in low- and middle-income countries. It focuses on projects that offer innovative solutions for climate change mitigation and adaptation, including renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, and sustainable business ventures. PFAN aims to assist projects that are commercially and technically viable while requiring minimal or no grant funding. The organization prioritizes initiatives that enhance energy access for remote communities, scale existing clean energy projects, and develop new sustainable technologies. Eligible businesses can receive investment ranging from $1 million to $50 million, with an exception for energy access and rural electrification projects, where funding can start from $500,000. Investments may be disbursed in smaller tranches as per project needs. PFAN does not support projects involving nuclear energy, fossil fuel combustion, carbon capture and storage, waste incineration, or any initiatives that cause significant environmental or social harm. The program is designed to empower entrepreneurs by providing expert guidance, helping them navigate financial challenges, and connecting them with potential investors to drive impactful clean energy solutions globally.

Who can Apply?

To qualify for PFAN support, projects or businesses must contribute to climate change adaptation or use clean energy technologies. Eligible sectors include renewable energy deployment, energy efficiency, climate-smart agriculture, clean cooking solutions, and sustainable industrial processes. PFAN supports businesses that demonstrate commercial and technical viability while requiring minimal or no grant funding. Existing grant-funded projects remain eligible. PFAN is open to greenfield projects, expansion of small-scale pilots, rural electrification, off-grid energy solutions, and new clean technology ventures. Additionally, mergers, acquisitions, and joint ventures that enhance clean energy development are eligible. However, PFAN does not support projects involving nuclear energy, fossil fuel combustion, carbon capture and storage, waste incineration, gas venting and flaring, or those that harm critical habitats. Projects that involve forced or child labor, cultural heritage destruction, or involuntary resettlement are also excluded. The grant is open to entrepreneurs operating in Sub-Saharan Africa, Central, South and Southeast Asia, the Pacific Islands, Eastern Europe, Central America, and the Caribbean Islands, aiming to scale up their clean energy innovations.
