About Organisation

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) serves as the world’s central intergovernmental forum for scientific and technical cooperation in the nuclear field. Established to promote the safe, secure, and peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, the IAEA plays a pivotal role in advancing international peace, security, and sustainable development. By supporting its Member States in applying nuclear technologies, the Agency helps address pressing global challenges such as energy, health, food security, and environmental protection.

Operating as part of the United Nations system, the IAEA also monitors nuclear programs to ensure compliance with international agreements and safeguard standards, thus reinforcing trust and transparency among nations. Its efforts span multiple disciplines, from nuclear medicine and radiotherapy to agriculture and clean energy. The Agency also invests in developing human capital and capacity building, with a strong focus on inclusivity and gender equality in science.

Through initiatives like the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme, the IAEA emphasizes empowering women to pursue careers in nuclear fields, ensuring a diverse workforce capable of driving innovation and meeting future challenges. The Agency’s commitment reflects its dual mission—advancing nuclear science while safeguarding humanity and the environment.

About the Grant

Launched in 2020 by IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi, the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme (MSCFP) was created to inspire and support women in pursuing advanced studies and careers in nuclear science and technology. Named after Nobel laureate and pioneering physicist Marie Sklodowska-Curie, the program has already made significant strides in shaping a more inclusive nuclear workforce.

Since its inception, the MSCFP has received more than 3,000 applications and awarded fellowships to 760 women from 129 countries, enabling them to study nuclear-related disciplines in 76 countries worldwide. The fellowship covers areas ranging from nuclear energy and applications in healthcare to nuclear safety, security, law, and non-proliferation.

Fellows benefit not only from financial support for tuition and living expenses but also from unique opportunities for practical training through internships facilitated by the IAEA. These placements often provide critical international exposure and hands-on experience, preparing participants for impactful careers in science and technology.

Testimonials from past fellows highlight the program’s transformative role. For example, fellows have contributed to innovations in radiopharmacy, radiotherapy, and nuclear safety systems, directly advancing solutions to global challenges. The MSCFP continues to strengthen female representation in the nuclear sector, fostering innovation and leadership for the future.

Who can Apply?

The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship Programme is open to female students from IAEA Member States who are pursuing or accepted into a master’s degree program in a nuclear-related field at an accredited university. The program prioritizes inclusivity while ensuring academic excellence and is designed to support women passionate about advancing their expertise in the nuclear sciences.

Eligibility requirements include:

  • Applicants must be female candidates.

  • Must be accepted into or enrolled in an accredited master’s program in a nuclear-related discipline, such as nuclear science and applications, nuclear energy, nuclear safety, nuclear security, safeguards and non-proliferation, or nuclear law.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with strong academic credentials, typically those achieving 75% or above, or a GPA greater than 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

The fellowship is open to candidates from diverse backgrounds and all IAEA Member States, ensuring global representation. It aims to provide opportunities for young women who wish to gain advanced knowledge, international exposure, and practical training in order to pursue careers in the nuclear field. By supporting their education, the MSCFP contributes to bridging the gender gap in science and technology worldwide.
