Through these programs, the Foundation aims to propel breakthroughs in leukemia research, ultimately contributing to improved patient outcomes and advancing scientific knowledge in hematologic oncology.

About the Grant

The Leukemia Research Foundation’s New Investigator Research Grant Program supports early-career scientists conducting novel research in leukemia and myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS). Targeting new investigators within seven years of their first faculty-level position, the program provides grants up to $150,000 over two years to fund research that may lead to groundbreaking insights into leukemia. This funding cycle opens July 1, 2024, with a phased application process starting in December 2024. The grant is intended to cover research costs excluding major capital equipment and principal investigator salary, with a cap of $3,000 on research travel. The Leukemia Research Foundation encourages applications from researchers who reflect the diverse backgrounds of the research community.

Who can Apply?

Eligible applicants are new, independent investigators at nonprofit academic institutions and within seven years of their first faculty-level position. Candidates must have an independent laboratory and the ability to oversee research personnel and project decisions. Time spent in training roles, such as postdoctoral fellowships or residencies, is excluded from the seven-year limit. The program accommodates career interruptions, which applicants must document in their application. Non-U.S. applicants are eligible, as are researchers with specific grant types (KO8, R00, R99) under the $175,000 annual direct cost limit. However, researchers with NIH RO1 funding, VA Merit Awards, or total annual direct funding exceeding $175,000 are ineligible. Former Leukemia Research Foundation grant recipients and fellows are also not eligible.
