About the Grant

The Spatial Thinking: Inspiring Action with Place-Based Solutions grant program by National Geographic Society supports projects that use spatial thinking to address challenges unique to specific places. The program focuses on diverse fields, including conservation, education, research, storytelling, and technology. Grants are available in two levels: Level I, designed for early-career individuals or those new to National Geographic, and Level II, intended for experienced professionals with prior grant experience. This funding opportunity seeks to empower researchers, educators, and storytellers to create tangible impacts in their respective fields, fostering a deeper understanding of the planet and its inhabitants.

Who can Apply?

Applicants must be at least 18 years old at the time of application. Projects must begin at least six months after the submission deadline to ensure timely disbursement of funds. If a project is conducted outside the applicant’s home country or community, it must include a local collaborator with significant involvement. Applicants can submit only one grant proposal as a project leader at a time.

Level I Grants: Open to individuals seeking to establish themselves in their field, gain leadership experience, or build a connection with National Geographic Society. No prior grant experience is required.

Level II Grants: Open to both newcomers and experienced professionals, including previous National Geographic grant recipients. Applicants must demonstrate expertise and the potential for high-impact outcomes.

Applications must be submitted in English, though it does not need to be the applicant’s primary language.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit their proposals through the National Geographic Society’s application portal. The submission should outline the project’s objectives, significance, expected outcomes, and budget details. A detailed explanation of the project’s methodology and collaboration, if applicable, is required. Proposals must adhere to the eligibility criteria and focus areas specified.

Applicants should ensure their project start date is at least six months after the submission deadline to receive funding on time.

Grant Amount
