About Organisation

Cultural Survival is a nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the rights of Indigenous peoples worldwide. Cultural Survival provides resources, advocacy, and funding opportunities to help Indigenous communities access the tools and support needed to strengthen their media and communications. Their programs focus on enhancing Indigenous self-determination, cultural sustainability, and political participation, especially in areas related to media and community communication. Through initiatives such as the Indigenous Community Media Fund, Cultural Survival strengthens Indigenous voices and supports community-driven media projects that promote social, environmental, and political change. With a focus on empowering marginalized groups such as Indigenous women, youth, and other genders, the organization promotes inclusivity, capacity building, and long-term sustainability of Indigenous media platforms.

About the Grant

The Indigenous Community Media Fund (ICMF), supported by Cultural Survival, provides funding to strengthen Indigenous community media and radio stations. This funding is intended to improve media infrastructure, enhance transmission systems, and provide training opportunities for community journalists. The fund aims to promote the sustainability of community media managed by Indigenous Peoples by supporting projects that focus on organizational development, policy advocacy, and communication strategies that increase political and community participation. The ICMF prioritizes projects that include women, marginalized genders, and youth, and this year, the fund particularly seeks to support environmental justice projects addressing climate change, including prevention and mitigation strategies for natural disasters. The fund supports initiatives that enhance the capacity of Indigenous media, promote the right to Indigenous communication, and help communities advocate for their rights. Projects funded by the ICMF have addressed a range of issues, from legal processes to access media frequencies to the development of innovative content related to Indigenous rights, climate change, and cultural heritage.
