About Organisation

The Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation (ISN) within the U.S. Department of State plays a crucial role in preventing the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction (WMD) and addressing related security threats globally. ISN collaborates with international partners to enhance capabilities against the misuse of advanced technologies. The bureau’s focus includes the proliferation of military technologies, particularly semiconductors, which are essential for electronic devices and dual-use applications. Through its initiatives, ISN works to reinforce international norms and standards in research and business, promoting the security of semiconductor technology to prevent exploitation by malign actors.

About the Grant

The “Build Partner Capabilities to Protect Semiconductor and CHIPS Technology” grant aims to strengthen global efforts to secure semiconductor technologies from misuse and theft. It recognizes the vital role semiconductors play in both civilian and military applications, including their potential for dual-use in technologies like artificial intelligence. This funding initiative addresses the risks posed by malign actors who exploit vulnerabilities in due diligence, security practices, and cybersecurity. By supporting initiatives that enhance awareness and protection of semiconductor technologies, the grant seeks to safeguard intellectual property and promote responsible use of these critical components to prevent their misuse in WMD and military applications.
