About Organisation

Lloyd’s Register Foundation is a global safety-focused charity committed to engineering a safer world. With a heritage of over 250 years of maritime safety expertise, the Foundation aims to enhance life and property safety by promoting standards and educational initiatives. It uniquely operates through a partnership with Lloyd’s Register Group, which provides both financial support and technical collaboration. This collaboration allows the Foundation to expand its impact by leveraging expert knowledge, broad networks, and real-world insights from industry professionals. The Foundation’s work spans a wide range of disciplines and sectors, always centering on the mission of improving safety at a global level. The organization uses its investments and dividends to fund impactful safety initiatives and to support knowledge generation and dissemination worldwide. Through its newly launched 2024–2029 strategy, the Foundation is committed to becoming a leading source of reliable safety evidence that addresses critical safety challenges and informs better decision-making and policy. The Foundation is also dedicated to collaboration and innovation in the fields of occupational safety and safety science, making it a vital contributor to global well-being and resilience.

About the Grant

Lloyd’s Register Foundation has introduced its 2024–2029 strategy with a renewed focus on global safety. A key initiative under this strategy is the launch of the Global Safety Evidence Centre—an international hub dedicated to gathering and sharing high-quality safety research. The Centre’s goal is to support the understanding of ‘what works’ in improving safety outcomes, especially in occupational settings and critical infrastructure. The Foundation invites proposals for research and evidence-based projects that aim to close knowledge gaps in occupational safety and health (OSH) and safety science. Themes include promoting safer work environments, evaluating interventions, developing risk models, and creating open-access data that supports policy and decision-making. Projects should aim to be completed within two years, and outputs must be accessible for public use via the Evidence Centre’s repository. The grant supports work that builds or challenges existing knowledge, utilizes sound methodology, and promotes real-world application and long-term impact. Proposals aligning with sustainable development goals, especially SDG 8.8 (safe workplaces), are encouraged. Research in Ocean Centre countries, and projects addressing the Foundation’s strategic challenges like climate adaptation and decarbonization, are especially welcomed.

Who can Apply?

This grant opportunity is open to academic institutions, research organizations, industry professionals, and non-profit entities from around the world. Applicants should be actively engaged in research aligned with the Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s mission of enhancing safety in work and critical infrastructure. Collaborative and interdisciplinary proposals are highly encouraged, particularly those led by local practitioners in their communities. Projects must align with the Foundation’s charitable mission and demonstrate a clear public or organizational benefit, not personal profit.

Eligible projects should focus on evidence-building around safety science or occupational safety and health (OSH). Strong proposals will include robust methodologies, real-world relevance, and clearly defined goals with practical outcomes. Organizations must also comply with funding regulations, ensuring all grant use is directed toward the stated objectives. Special preference is given to proposals from the Foundation’s Ocean Centre countries—India, Brazil, Kenya, Ghana, Bangladesh, Philippines, and Indonesia—or other coastal communities with similar characteristics. Projects leveraging additional funding or contributing to the Foundation’s strategic themes (such as maritime safety, sustainable infrastructure, or upskilling for engineering safety) are also prioritized. Non-charitable organizations must follow specific funding guidelines to ensure compliance with regulatory and ethical standards.

How to Apply?

Applicants must first register on the Lloyd’s Register Foundation’s Flexigrant system. Once registered and verified, submit an expression of interest detailing the proposed research. Shortlisted applicants will then be invited to submit a full proposal. The process emphasizes clarity, feasibility, and alignment with the Foundation’s mission.
