About the Grant
The Global Press Shifting Democracies Fellowship is a two-year, full-time program designed for women journalists who seek to investigate changing governance structures and their interconnectedness across various countries. The fellowship begins in January 2025 and runs until December 2026, requiring a commitment of 40 hours per week. Selected fellows will produce impactful investigative and explanatory journalism while participating in advanced skills training. They will work remotely from their home countries and become part of an international cohort of women journalists. The fellowship is open to applicants from 15 eligible countries, including Mexico, Brazil, India, and the Philippines. Each fellow receives an annual stipend of up to $30,000 USD, tailored to local market rates, along with opportunities for wellness support, mentorship, and access to a global health benefit plan. Additionally, fellows can apply for a technology scholarship or tech repair loan. With a focus on enhancing reporting skills and fostering visual storytelling, this fellowship equips women journalists with the tools necessary to cover critical issues related to democracy and civil liberties in their communities effectively.
Who can Apply?
The Shifting Democracies Fellowship is open to women journalists from specific eligible countries, including Mexico, Brazil, India, and the Philippines. Applicants must identify as women and currently reside in their coverage country for the duration of the two-year fellowship. A minimum of five years of prior experience in newsroom reporting or related fields is required. Candidates should demonstrate proficiency in the English language and exhibit enthusiasm for learning new reporting and writing skills. A strong understanding of civil liberties and the ability to cover related topics is essential. Additionally, applicants should possess a passion for visual storytelling and a desire to advance their photojournalism skills. Basic technology skills and regular access to the internet are necessary for successful participation in the fellowship. As part of the application process, candidates must submit a current English-language resume, a cover letter addressing gaps in coverage of democratic shifts in their country, a portfolio of three work samples, and three photographs showcasing their photography experience. Note that the use of AI in creating application materials will result in immediate disqualification.
