About Organisation

Homeworld Collective recognizes that the roots of our climate challenges lie in biological processes. The way food grows, soil remains fertile, and ecosystems stay stable is fundamentally biological. Even the fossil resources we rely on for fuel, materials, and chemicals originally stem from living organisms. Carbon cycles—both rapid and slow—are driven and influenced by biological mechanisms, shaping the planet’s atmospheric and geological transformations over time.

By understanding and leveraging these biological processes, we can develop solutions that support a sustainable planet and enhance human well-being. Homeworld Collective is committed to funding research that harnesses biotechnology to mitigate climate change and remove greenhouse gases from the atmosphere. With a focus on early-stage, high-impact projects, the organization aims to bridge the gap between science and practical applications that address critical environmental challenges.

Through strategic funding initiatives, Homeworld Collective encourages innovative ideas that take novel approaches rather than incremental improvements to existing solutions. By supporting researchers, students, and professionals, the organization fosters a collaborative ecosystem that advances climate-conscious biotechnology.

About the Grant

Homeworld Collective’s Garden Grants program supports pioneering projects at the intersection of biotechnology and greenhouse gas removal. The grant is designed to provide early-stage funding for research aimed at addressing significant climate challenges through biotech innovations.

The initiative seeks bold, unconventional ideas that tackle pressing environmental problems with fresh approaches, rather than incremental extensions of existing solutions. The funding supports the de-risking phase of promising projects—helping researchers establish the foundation for groundbreaking work that could lead to transformative solutions.

Each proposal consists of two parts:

  1. Problem Statement – A public document outlining the issue, specific challenges, and actionable goals of the project.
  2. Solution Statement – A confidential document detailing the research approach, methodology, and intended outcomes to safeguard novel ideas.

In addition to funding, Homeworld Collective fosters collaboration by sharing problem statements publicly, allowing researchers to learn from each other while protecting their unique solutions.

Who can Apply?

Homeworld Collective encourages applications from universities, research institutions, and non-profit organizations across the globe. The grant welcomes students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty members as lead applicants, promoting fresh perspectives in climate-focused biotechnology research.

There is no specific credential or academic requirement—the quality of the idea, the clarity of the proposal, and the applicant’s ability to execute the project are the key selection criteria. The grant is open to applicants from any country who can demonstrate an innovative approach to greenhouse gas removal through biotechnology.

While startups and private companies may apply, their applications will undergo higher scrutiny. They must demonstrate that their outputs will serve the public good, remain open-access, and align with the funding organization’s 501(c)3 mandate.

How to Apply?

The application process opens from January 27, 2025, to February 28, 2025. Interested candidates must submit a proposal outlining the problem statement and solution statement. The application should clearly define the problem, the innovative approach to addressing it, and the feasibility of the proposed research.
