About Organisation

The Environmental Research & Education Foundation (EREF) is dedicated to advancing sustainable waste management practices through research and education. EREF supports projects that address environmental challenges, particularly those focusing on improving waste management systems, mitigating climate impacts, and enhancing recycling and circularity. By fostering partnerships and funding innovative solutions, EREF aims to drive progress in materials management and environmental sustainability, ensuring lasting benefits for industries, communities, and ecosystems worldwide.

About the Grant

EREF’s Research Grants support projects addressing critical environmental issues: greenhouse gas emissions, emerging contaminants, and advancing materials circularity. These grants aim to explore innovative solutions, enhance scientific understanding, and develop effective strategies for sustainable materials management. Research grants typically range from $15,000 to over $500,000, with an average of $160,000 in recent years. Typical project durations are about two years. Proposals exceeding $300,000 or extending beyond three years must include detailed justifications for the higher funding or extended timeline. Collaboration and in-kind contributions are encouraged to maximize the impact of funded initiatives.

Who can Apply?

Researchers from both U.S. and non-U.S. institutions are eligible. Applications are open to academic and non-academic institutions, with principal investigators required to have relevant expertise. While graduate students cannot serve as PIs, they are encouraged to apply for scholarships. Proposals involving multiple institutions or external funding partnerships are welcomed. EREF does not fund projects focused on commercialization, lobbying, or narrowly scoped initiatives. Overhead costs are capped at 25% of direct expenses.

How to Apply?

Submit a pre-proposal adhering to EREF guidelines. Ensure the application highlights the project’s relevance, objectives, and alignment with EREF priorities. Collaboration details and external funding, if any, should be included.
