About Organisation

The Endangered Material Knowledge Programme (EMKP) supports the documentation and preservation of material knowledge systems that are threatened with disappearance. The programme is associated with the British Museum and supports projects that record knowledge connected with objects, architecture, craft practices, environments, performances, and other forms of material culture.

Through research and documentation, EMKP helps preserve knowledge that may otherwise be lost as communities, environments, and traditional practices change.

About the Grant

The EMKP Documentation Grants 2026–2027 support projects documenting endangered material knowledge systems around the world. The programme offers two funding categories designed for projects of different sizes and levels of complexity.

Small Documentation Grants provide up to £20,000 for projects lasting up to one year. These grants are suitable for focused documentation projects, pilot research, and early-stage initiatives.

Large Documentation Grants provide up to £100,000 for projects lasting up to two years. They support more extensive documentation involving larger teams, multiple research activities, or longer project timelines.

Documentation methods may include photography, film, audio recordings, written notes, maps, drawings, and three-dimensional models. Successful applicants must make the required digital documentation available through the programme’s open-access repository.

Who can Apply?

Applicants can be of any nationality or academic background. However, applications must be submitted in partnership with a host institution capable of providing independent financial and ethical oversight.

Projects may be conducted anywhere in the world, with priority given to regions where research funding is limited. Researchers, cultural practitioners, and interdisciplinary teams with suitable host institutions may therefore be eligible to apply.

Applicants should review the programme guidelines carefully to ensure their proposed work meets its documentation, ethical, financial, and digital preservation requirements.

How to Apply?

Visit the official EMKP Documentation Grants page and review the application guidelines for the relevant funding category.

Prepare a proposal explaining the knowledge system at risk, its cultural and practical significance, the proposed documentation methods, the research team, and the expected outputs. Applicants must also coordinate with their host institution regarding financial oversight, ethical review, and grant administration.

Submit the application through the official online application portal before the deadline
