The Archives at NCBS serves as a public centre dedicated to preserving the history of science and technology in contemporary India. With over 300,000 processed objects, the Archives is home to diverse collections spanning manuscripts, photographs, audio recordings, scientific equipment, and field notes. The 2000-square-foot facility at NCBS includes state-of-the-art storage and processing areas to ensure the long-term conservation and public access to these materials. The Archives focus on preserving materials that document scientific culture and contributions, particularly from under-represented groups in STEM. It aims to make archival material publicly accessible through its digital archive, facilitating research and promoting open knowledge.
About the Grant
The Archives at NCBS offers funding for projects that digitize and provide public access to archival material related to science and technology in India, with an emphasis on under-represented voices. This grant program, funded by Arcadia, supports projects that document marginalized groups and historical narratives at the intersection of science and society. Grants cover various costs, including digitization, cataloging, and preservation, aiming for open digital access to the materials. Projects must ensure adherence to international archival standards, and the material will be made publicly available through the Archives’ digital platform.
Who can Apply?
Eligible applicants must be Indian citizens with a legally registered organization in India that can receive the grant. Projects should focus on under-represented groups in STEM, with material from the last 200 years (1850-1995) related to the history of science, technology, and medicine in India. Applicants must demonstrate a commitment to preserving and digitizing archival material, and they must have access to physical archives and sufficient experience in archival work. The project lead should be capable of managing the project’s execution, finances, and deliverables.
