About the Grant
The Coastal Ecosystems for People and Planet Fund, supported by the Lindblad Expeditions-National Geographic (LEX-NG) Fund, provides funding to projects focused on conserving, restoring, and researching blue forest ecosystems. These ecosystems, which include mangroves, salt marshes, kelp forests, and seagrass meadows, play a crucial role in coastal protection, climate adaptation, and carbon sequestration. The grant aims to support scientific projects that tackle ecosystem degradation caused by climate change and human activity. The LEX-NG Fund prioritizes initiatives that engage local communities and enhance environmental stewardship in regions visited by the National Geographic-Lindblad fleet, though projects in other locations are welcome. Successful projects will help reverse the alarming rates of ecosystem decline and contribute to global climate solutions. The fund offers up to $20,000 for Level I grants and up to $100,000 for Level II grants. Who can Apply?
The Coastal Ecosystems for People and Planet Fund is open to individuals leading projects that focus primarily on the conservation, restoration, or research of blue forests such as mangroves, salt marshes, kelp forests, or seagrass meadows. Applicants must have a scientific background, with projects centered on ocean-related issues. Projects focused on storytelling or education are not eligible. While projects in regions covered by the National Geographic-Lindblad expeditions are preferred, applications from other areas are also welcome. Applicants must be over the age of 18 and lead the project themselves. Level I grants, capped at $20,000, are geared toward individuals at earlier stages of their careers who are building experience in conservation work. Level II grants, capped at $100,000, are suitable for more experienced researchers, including those who have previously received National Geographic funding. Projects must be designed with strong local collaborations, community involvement, and clear, achievable goals. Applications must be in English and include comprehensive details about the project’s purpose, methodology, and expected impact. Priority will be given to candidates who already have connections or a track record of work in the project location.
