The foundation focuses on accelerating research that leads to tangible environmental and social benefits, with special attention to the Global South. It believes in strengthening local communities by supporting chemistry-based solutions that improve health, agriculture, energy access, biodiversity, and water management. Through funding, expert guidance, and international collaboration, the Elsevier Foundation is helping shape a sustainable future while ensuring that scientific innovation is accessible and aligned with global development goals.

About the Grant

The Chemistry for Climate Action Challenge 2026, organized by the Elsevier Foundation, offers funding to innovators advancing green and sustainable chemistry solutions in the Global South. The grant supports projects that tackle major sustainability issues such as waste utilization, renewable energy, ecosystem health, climate mitigation, sustainable agriculture, water resource management, and health and well-being. Two winning projects will each receive USD 25,000 to implement solutions that address urgent environmental challenges in low- and middle-income countries. The program encourages scale-ups of early-stage projects, especially those where the grant represents a significant portion of the total funding required and where local implementation partners are actively engaged. Projects must integrate scientific chemistry methods, involve local communities, and promote gender equity and inclusion. Submissions from outside the Global South or those lacking a scientific focus or gender dimension are not eligible. The grant also emphasizes research that contributes to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. With a structured selection process involving expert review and presentations at a global conference, the program ensures that funded projects are impactful and community-driven, helping to accelerate research and deliver meaningful climate solutions.

Who can Apply?

The Chemistry for Climate Action Challenge is open to individuals, research groups, or organizations based in the Global South, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Eligible applicants should be working on chemistry-based solutions that address climate and sustainability challenges, such as renewable energy, waste management, sustainable agriculture, or water remediation. Projects must have a strong scientific chemistry component and a focus on environmental impact. Applicants are encouraged to submit scale-ups of early-stage projects where the grant funding forms a significant portion of the total budget. Local implementation partners must be actively involved in delivering project outcomes. Proposals without a gender equity dimension or inclusive participation will be considered out of scope. Projects from outside the Global South, or those not focused on sustainable chemistry, are ineligible. Applicants must also demonstrate how their work aligns with climate change mitigation and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. Strong community engagement, collaboration with local stakeholders, and the ability to translate research into practical solutions are essential. The program welcomes applications that show potential for real-world impact, scalability, and innovation, while also addressing health, energy, agriculture, or environmental challenges in vulnerable regions.

How to Apply?

Applicants must submit their proposals online before October 1, 2025, detailing their project’s objectives, chemistry approach, expected outcomes, and community impact. Proposals should clearly explain how funding will support the project’s scale-up and include details of local partners and gender equity strategies. All submissions must align with the eligibility criteria and sustainability goals. Applications will be reviewed by experts, with shortlisted candidates advancing to later selection rounds.
